The Beauty of a Soul

“And done. Aren’t you beautiful. Sorry about the glass jar but I find it better than a box. I like being able to see you. Enjoy your afterlife love.” I smile as I tie a ribbon around the mason jar, hanging it from the ceiling with many others. It glows a soft blue, the soul inside it at peace. A beautiful addition to my collection. Part of being a reaper I suppose. The only one in the demon world I may add. Most reapers enjoy being able to live with the humans, but not me. I enjoy it down here.
I turn off the light and watch all the different souls dangle from the ceiling, their different colors reflecting exquisitely against the wall. All two hundred and forty seven had made a deal with me.
I leave the room and lock the vault door tight before hiding it behind a rather heavy curtain. My biggest secret. Well that’s not necessarily true, my gaming room is my biggest secret. Can’t have the demons here seeing all my new age devices and games. Especially not a certain vampire that would probably kill me to obtain my precious treasure.
Oh god that’s right. Oh he’s going to kill me for forgetting it was our ‘bff’ day. I’ll just tell him I got lost on the way, wouldn’t be the first time.
I pull out my phone and call him. It rings a few times before he answers. “(Name) you are late for bff day. You know I had plans. You know there is new memorabilia to be bought.” I cut him off before he can drone on more. “Sorry Staz I got lost, but I’ll be over in twenty so just start heading there and we will meet up!” I could hear him grumbling on the end. “Fine but you know the rules, being late means you buy me dinner.” “Yeah yeah I know. See ya then.” I hang up.
Teleporting is easy, teleporting without anyone seeing is difficult. Reapers aren’t exactly liked around here. Probably why most prefer the land of humanity. Walking through Staz’s territory is also easy. It wasn’t always, the demons here would attack me on site but that was fixed. Thanks to a very otaku vampire.
“(Name) finally!” “Hey Staz, miss me that much huh?” “Yeah now let’s get going! I made sure the line became non existent while I was waiting for you.” “Typical you.” We walked into the small memorabilia shop together. Him on the hunt for everything that looked new or like something he didn’t already own. The little basket slowly filling.
I found it hard not to admire him. The way he got so excited over everything he found. The way he bounced around the store acting like a super cool guy. The way his dweebness always found its way out. He is truly amazing. Adorable.
“(Name) you need this.” I look at the item in his hands. A dress, skater style, with tiny anime cats printed on it. “You sure you don’t want it Staz~” He laughs. “As good as we all know I would look in this I think it suits you more.” I accept the dress from his outstretched hands. “Very well, to the dressing room then~”
I twirled around a few times, commending how nice the dress looked on me in the mirror's reflection. “Hurry up before I come in there.” I open the door and walk out while laughing. “Well? How do I look?” I twirled a few more times for good measure.
He began walking around me examining the outfit. I tried to seem serious, a hard thing to do considering he looked ridiculous in a gummi vocaloid jacket, and odd tie with half moons, and pizza sunglasses.
“Yes, yes, quite nice, I think you are ready now. Where is my camera? I must photograph this ensemble for …” I cut him off by placing my hands over his mouth laughing more. “Staz stop that!” He said a few muffled words before I removed my hands letting him speak again.
He grinned his teeth showing. “You should seriously get that dress, it’s awesome.” “I think I will!” I walk back into the dressing room and change back into my normal black jeans and tank top. I don’t really wear colors often. I slip my boots back on and walk out holding the dress.
After having purchased everything we wanted we decided to walk around. A typical thing for us to do on bff day. Although I must admit, my feelings for him have begun to far exceed best friends, something I will never tell him. Rejection is a powerful thing, especially when you live as long as I do and said person has no idea that you are a reaper. A demon hated by all but their own. Well actually that last bit is a lie. Reapers hate other reapers just as much as everyone else. We are a hated species.
“So are you going to tell me now or do I have to keep guessing?” I smiled looking up at him. “Now why would I ruin such a fun game?” “Please (name)? I really wanna know what type of creepy monster demon you are~” He does this weird thing with his fingers where he wiggles them at me. “I’ve been your best friend for like ever I deserve to know.” I laugh. “Tell you what, you can have three last guesses. If you succeed I’ll show you my biggest secret, and if you fail you have to give up on discovering what I am.” “Deal.” “Okay, now that that’s done, want some food? I hear The Third Eye is open and that Mamejirou is in a good mood today.” “Well we can’t have that~”
We laugh while walking to the bar/cafe. I wave at Saty and Mamejirou before sitting in front of them, Staz plopping down next to me. Ironically Saty and Mamejirou are the only two in this world that know my true identity. Thankfully they promised not to tell anyone and have agreed to be my friend regardless. Probably because I often keep Staz too busy to stop by.
“(Name) good to see you, Staz leave.” I laugh and watch Staz and Mamejirou bicker while ordering the usual from Saty, who quietly nodded.
I like Saty, she has a beautiful soul compared to most of the demons here. Though Staz’s is the most beautiful. It’s so vibrant. Probably what originally drew me to him.
“So (Name),” I looked to him, tilting my head in question. “Are you actually a dragon?” I laughed. “Staz are you giving up? What part of me is dragon like?” He laughed too. “I dunno you are pretty fierce.” “Am I? I never noticed.” “Okay so I am down to two more guesses then.” I smiled.
“Am I allowed to search your apartment for hints?” “Staz wouldn’t that make it too easy for you?” “Nah, I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long I’m ready to stoop to any level.” “Very well, but you stay out of my dresser!” He laughed. “Yeah okay.”
After eating we chatted for a little more before parting ways. I would have teleported but I decided it would be safer to walk as you never know who is watching. Walking had it’s challenges though, like the multitude of demons that tried to talk to me. Some hitting on me, asking for a date, amongst other things. Others would just give me dirty looks, as is usual considering nobody really likes anyone. Some tried starting a fight, but quickly backed down after a threat was issued.
About halfway through the city I remembered I could call the pigeon men. What were they called specifically? I can never remember. I mentally berated myself for being a spacy idiot before calling them.  It didn’t take long for them to arrive and deliver me home. Safe.
I took a look at the clock, I had spent more time out than I had expected. I was hoping to make it home sooner so I could beat the game I had been working on for a week. Now I only have an hour to play it before I have to go collect my next soul. Not really much use in playing if that’s how it is. I guess I could go watch my target for a bit till he dies. It’ll pass the time.
I grab my cloak that prevents human eyes from seeing me and put it on before teleporting up to the human world. Ah there’s the target. A famous musician, who only became famous through our deal. His soul is a beautiful crimson that shimmers slightly. He was originally to be a lawyer with a sad life. I fixed that by making his dream come true. He is fifty one now, we made the deal when he was sixteen. I gave him thirty five years of happiness. That’s longer than most reapers deal out. They are impatient though, I like to allow the soul to grow and develop. I like to allow it to get to it’s highest peak before claiming it.
Another difference between me and other reapers, I don’t devour the souls I take. I collect them and allow them a wonderful afterlife. Because of this I have been cast out. No longer allowed to converse with the others. No longer allowed to live with them. They believe me too weak.
In reality it takes a lot of strength to resist the urge to consume a human soul. Something so delicate. Once you have one you are forever changed, never able to turn back to who you once were. Therefor I am seen as incomplete.
I follow my target through the bustling city, watching his final hour. He walks into an alley filled with homeless, setting down several heavy bags and announcing that they are for them. Then he takes out his wallet and removes all his cash, he splits it among them. I smile, indeed I choose a good one. I knew fame would not ruin his soul, indeed his soul is rare enough to have withstood it.
After he finishes there I watch as he walks away, going to a house. He slides a note into the mailbox. He has ten minutes left before his time of death. I follow him to the location we first made the deal. At the time it was a park, but time had changed it, now it is a simple house. It is his house. I follow him to his porch, where he sits. He is smiling, reminiscing of his life. He knows he will see me soon.
One minute passes and he stops breathing, dying peacefully. His soul floats for a moment before flying into the jar I had prepared. I smile while closing the lid. “Enjoy eternity my lovely.” Then I teleport home to add his soul to the others. So he may join them in heaven.
The final hours of the day passed by as I played the game I had been waiting to complete. The final boss proving to be a challenge, as expected. Just as I was about to dodge his death blow I heard a crash causing me to turn away from the screen, my character died. I sighed and stood up ready to see what caused the sound.
I walked quietly, being sure not to make a sound, while examining every room. My guard is up and I am ready for anything. Or so I thought.
